We didn’t set out to create a story, we were just trying to build a life that felt real. When we met, our worlds were completely different. Christy was a widow with three daughters, including her oldest, who had become a mother herself. Curtis was a bachelor, but anyone who knew him could see he was built for fatherhood, steady, patient, and full of heart.

When we decided to get married, we were living in Los Angeles. We loved parts of that life, but deep down, we knew it wasn’t the kind of environment we wanted to raise a family in. We wanted something slower, something that let us breathe. So, we packed up and traded city lights for country skies, heading to Mississippi, just for a little while, we thought.

But life had other plans. The pandemic hit, and that “little while” turned into five years. Those five years changed everything for us. We homeschooled our kids, coached basketball, and ran a small gym together. We worked hard, laughed harder, got in the best shape of our lives and learned to find joy in the simple things. The country gave us space to grow, not just as a couple, but as a family.

We learned to depend on each other, to slow down, and to see God’s hand in the details. We built a rhythm,  mornings of meditation, afternoons filled with family workouts or team practices, and lots of activities outdoors. Saturdays were for the Sabbath and for reconnecting with what really matters. The peace and purpose we found there became the blueprint for how we live today.

There were growing pains, of course, but even those seasons refined us. Life was steady and good until the storms came. We faced a series of family losses that reminded us how fragile time really is. In our own wisdom, we thought we were moving back West to be closer to Christy’s parents, who were getting older. But, Curtis unexpectedly lost both of his parents, both before the age of 64.

That kind of loss changes you. It strips away everything that doesn’t matter and brings into sharp focus what truly does. We realized that life is short, and legacy isn’t about success or status, it’s about how you love your family, how you lead your home, and how you raise the next generation.

What started as our personal pursuit of peace became something bigger a calling. We saw clearly that the key to healing our communities, and ultimately saving America, begins in the home. When families are whole, children thrive. When fathers lead and mothers nurture, strength returns to our culture.

That belief became the heartbeat of Humanity Assemble, our way of turning what we lived through into a movement. From basketball courts to family wellness programs, from community events to fatherhood advocacy, everything we do now flows from that foundation.

We may have left Los Angeles behind, but what we found in Mississippi, faith, family, and purpose, became our compass. We discovered that the simple life isn’t small; it’s sacred. And if our story can inspire even one family to slow down, rebuild trust, and live with intention, then maybe this is more than our journey, maybe it’s the beginning of bringing America back home.  We now reside in Arizona.
